Acne is an inflammation on
skin that is caused by various reasons. Acne occurs on areas that are known to
have the most sebaceous glands (also known as oil glands). The areas like face,
neck, neck, chest, back, shoulders.
How does acne form?
As we know acne mostly
affect the areas with oil glands or sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands live
just below your skin inside the pores and are responsible for secreting an oily
substance called sebum that helps protect the skin of all mammals from drying out
and any other harmful environmental factor. Sebum makes sure too much water
doesn’t escape from your body and that too much doesn’t get in. It maintains an
optimum skin moisture and act as a barrier.
Sebaceous glands are typically found within fair follicles. Acne
occurs when this hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin cells and oil. This
clogged pore with dead skin cells and oil creates a perfect and optimum environment
for bacteria to thrive and grow profusely. When the bacteria start to grow and
spread on the skin it causes, inflammation, redness and acne in result.
Causes of acne.
The formation of pimples or acne has various reasons. Some
includes bacteria, excess oil, hormones, stress and dead skin cells.
Types of acne
There are different kinds of acne formed on the skin
depending on what caused the acne and in which environment or condition acne start
to spread. In this article I will discuss 6 types of acne that are commonly a
problem throughout the globe.
1.
Blackheads
2.
Whiteheads
3.
Pustules
4.
Papules
5.
Cystic
6. Hormonal acne
1.
Blackheads
Blackheads are non-inflammatory acne; they do not cause any
swelling or redness on the skin. How does these turn black you may ask. when open pores become clogged with
excess oil or dead skin cells the top layer of these pores remains open which
results in its black color. Salicylic acid is said to be the best for the
treatment of these blackheads.
2.
Whiteheads
Similar to
blackheads, whiteheads are also non-inflammatory and do not cause any swelling
and redness. The whiteheads are also caused due to the clogging of pores
similar to blackheads. The whiteheads also occur when a poor gets clogged up
with excess sebum or dead skin cells but Whiteheads are harder to treat because
the pore is closed up and not open like the blackheads.
3.
Pustules
Pustules are inflammatory acne that cause pain and redness
on the skin. These are not only caused by dead skin cells and excess oil but also
bacteria. The bacteria penetrate deeper in skin and cause inflammation to this
type of acne. Pustules occurs when the walls around the pores begin to break
down. pustules are filled with puss and protrude
from the skin they're usually red and filled with white or yellow heads and are
painful.
4.
Papules
Like pustules; papules are also inflammatory acne caused
not only by dead skin cells and extra sebum but also bacteria that cause them
to be painful as the bacteria seeps within the skin. In contrast where pustules
are filled with puss, papules are red or pink and also hurts to touch.
5.
Cystic acne
Cystic acne generally
needed professional treatment. Cysts need to be treated with prescription medication
from your dermatologist. When pustules and papules are not treated correctly,
they penetrate deeper into the skin and cause redness and inflammation. Cystic
acne result from infections.
6.
Hormonal acne
As the name
suggests hormonal acne results from the fluctuation of the hormones. The
fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone results in hormonal acne. Hormonal
acne mostly affects chin and jaw. If you have painful cystic acne near your jaw
and chin areas you are most likely suffering with hormonal acne.
Area affected by acne
The most probe
area to be affected by acne are the areas that have sebaceous glands. Your
Face, neck, shoulder, chest and back are mostly affected by the acne.
Chemical used for acne treatment.
Some chemicals that can be effective in the treatment of acne
are
1.
Benzoyl Peroxide
2.
AHA/BHA
3.
Vitamin C
4.
Sulphur
5.
Niacinamide
1.
Benzoyl Peroxide
The best chemical that is used
for the treatment of blackheads and whiteheads. As we have seen above this
non-inflammatory skin disease is caused by dead skin cells and excess sebum.
Benzoyl peroxide break down keratin. The clogged pore is broken down by benzoyl
peroxide as it releases Oxygen and as we all know bacteria can not grow in the
presence of Oxygen
2.
AHA/BHA
Alpha hydroxy acids and Beta hydroxy acids are the best
ingredients used for the treatment of blackheads. The most common used BHA is
Salicylic acid which is oil soluble. Being oil soluble is penetrated deeper
into the skin and remove that excess sebum and help in the treatment of acne
3.
Sulfur
Certain acnes or fungal acne does not fade away no matter
what you do. If no products or treatment helps to get rid of acne try Sulphur as
an ingredient in skincare products. Sulphur when used correctly is
anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and can help heal and nourish the skin.
4.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C an antioxidant is also an amazing product in
skincare industry.
5.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 is an important ingredient as it
helps in the production of ceramides. Read
more on niacinamide.
